Why Does Paint Blister?

Blistering refers to the formation of bubbles or raised areas in the paint film, typically caused by trapped moisture or improper application.

Primary Causes

• Moisture Entrapment – Water vapor escaping through the substrate gets trapped beneath the paint film.
• Painting on Damp Surfaces – Applying paint before the surface is fully dry leads to vapor pressure buildup.
• Heat & Sun Exposure – Rapid drying in direct sunlight can trap solvents or moisture beneath the paint.
• Poor Adhesion – Inadequate surface prep prevents proper bonding.

Fix It

1. Scrape off loose paint, sand smooth, and clean the surface.
2. Allow the substrate to dry completely before repainting.
3. Fix leaks, improve ventilation, and install vapor barriers if necessary.
4. Use breathable acrylic latex paints and apply primer before topcoating.
