Understanding Damp in Paint

Damp-related paint failures occur when moisture infiltrates the painted surface, leading to peeling, blistering, or mold growth.

Types of Damp

• Rising Damp – Moisture from foundations traveling up through masonry via capillary action.
• Penetrating Damp – Water entering through cracks, porous walls, or roof defects.
• Condensation – High humidity in poorly ventilated spaces creates moisture on cold surfaces.

Treatment

1. Identify and eliminate the moisture source — repair leaks, improve drainage.
2. Remove all affected paint and plaster back to the sound substrate.
3. Apply a fungicidal wash and moisture-resistant primer.
4. Use breathable silicate or mineral paints for masonry surfaces.
5. Maintain gutters and install vapor barriers where needed.
