What Is Paint Chalking?

Chalking is the formation of a powdery residue on painted surfaces due to the breakdown of the paint film under UV exposure and weathering.

Key Causes

• UV Exposure – Sunlight degrades the paint binder, releasing pigment particles as chalk.
• Low-Quality Paint – Paints with excessive pigment or weak binders chalk faster.
• Improper Application – Thin coats, over-thinning, or skipping primer reduce durability.
• Moisture & Humidity – Damp conditions accelerate binder degradation.

Treatment

1. Clean with a stiff brush and detergent, or pressure-wash for severe cases.
2. Rinse thoroughly and let the surface dry completely.
3. Apply a high-quality primer (alkyd or acrylic) to ensure adhesion.
4. Repaint with UV-resistant exterior-grade paint (100% acrylic).
