Paint Tips

Repairing Alligatoring

What Is Alligatoring?

Alligatoring is a paint defect characterized by a pattern of deep, interconnected cracks resembling alligator scales. It occurs due to:

  • Incompatible Paint Layers – Applying a rigid topcoat over a flexible undercoat creates tension as layers expand/contract differently.
  • Poor Adhesion – Painting over glossy surfaces without sanding or priming.
  • Improper Drying Times – Adding a new coat before the previous one fully dries.
  • Aging of Oil-Based Paints – Over time, oil paints lose elasticity and crack.

How to Repair

  1. Scrape or sand all loose paint and use chemical strippers for stubborn layers.
  2. Sand glossy areas and apply a high-quality acrylic primer.
  3. Use compatible paint systems — avoid rigid-over-flexible layers.
  4. Apply thin, even coats and allow full drying between each.
